Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you!
Whether you decide to celebrate or not, you cannot really avoid the fact that it is Valentine’s Day! A day celebrated once a year on the 14th February. In fact, it is not a public holiday but a commercial celebration of romance. People show their affection for each other by sending cards, flowers or chocolates with messages of love. But where did it all start?…
What is Valentines Day and how did it start?
The history of Valentines Day is a bit mysterious and it is not entirely clear where the day originated from. Many stories relate to both Christian and Ancient Roman traditions.
Many sources believe that Valentine’s Day came from the story of St Valentine. St Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred on February 14 in the year 270 CE. It is not clear how he became the patron saint of lovers. However, one theory suggests that the that the church used the day of St Valentine’s martyrdom to Christianize the old Roman festival ‘Lupercalia’. Lupercalia – a pagan festival held around the middle of February. The festival deterred evil spirits from a city. In addition, this helped to purify it, in turn releasing health and fertility.
The ancient ceremony included putting girls’ names in a box and letting the boys draw them out. As a result, couples would be paired off until the following year.
Eventually the custom of sending anonymous cards or messages to those whom one admired became the accepted way of celebrating Valentine’s Day.
