The colour orange (which actually gets its name from the fruit, not the other way around!) is often associated with amusement, warmth, fire and energy - it's certainly an exciting colour! In its more muted tones, it is also symbolic of Autumn and Halloween.

In Confucianism, orange represents transformation; it is also closely associated with Hinduism and Buddhism, commonly worn by monks across Asia.

It is also the colour most easily seen in dim light or in water, so it became the colour of choice for high visibility purposes! Life jackets, buoys, astronaut suits and more all often use orange for this reason, so it has also become associated with danger.

A few fun facts about the colour orange!

Before orange was introduced to the English-speaking world, orange things were often described as red or saffron. The first known recorded use of orange as a colour was in 1502!

The first orange grove in the UK was said to be in Surrey, where we at Carousel are based! Sir Walter Raleigh planted the seeds and the grove lasted until 1739.

When the sun is low on the horizon, like during sunsets and sunrises, its light passes through more of Earth's atmosphere before it reaches us. This causes the shorter wavelengths, like blues and greens, to scatter before the light reaches us, which is why we see oranges and reds!

As Autumn brings in with it cooler temperatures and shorter days, the leaves on trees turn orange. This is because the dominant green chlorophyll breaks down with less sunlight, letting us see the vibrant oranges, yellows and reds that were already there underneath.
