Despite the relatively short time we humans have known of them, dinosaurs have captured the imagination of many a generation of children! We all have our favourites, no matter how old we might get (asking around the Carousel team, our favourites include Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and Velociraptors!).

The excitement at sharing these fun facts with the kids certainly won't go extinct!

Dinosaur fossils have been found on all continents. This is because the continents as we know them weren't always where they were, and were joined together! (Parents: this is a great segue for a little lesson on tectonic plates. You're very welcome ;))

The oldest dinosaur known to us right now is the Nyasasaurus, estimated to have roamed the Earth around 243 million years ago. Though this is the oldest we've found, there's likely ones older that we haven't discovered yet!

If dinosaurs could make movies, they might have made their own version of Jaws - sharks have existed for 450 million years, and have been on Earth since before dinosaurs, and even before trees existed!

Megalosaurus is believed to be the first dinosaur discovered and described scientifically - though many attribute myths of dragons and giants and cyclops to fossil discoveries long ago!

Dinosaurs were first named in 1842 by Sir Richard Owen, after grouping together three pre-historic animals found in England that seemed to have a lot in common! These included Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus.

Sir Richard Owen later went on to found the Natural History Museum in Kensington! One of its most famous exhibits, Dippy, is a replica of a Diplodocus skeleton that was first unveiled in 1905.
