What is the history behind Mother's Day?Mother's Day originated from Mothering Sunday, a day where Christians would visit their "mother church" (the one they were baptised in!). This has been celebrated since the Middle Ages, and in later centuries, domestic servants would be given the day off to do this, usually meeting with their actual mothers. Over time, and with the influence of the American Mother's Day being established in the early 20th century, a secular Mother's Day began to be celebrated alongside Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

When is Mother's Day around the world?Mother's Day in the US is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, started by Anna Jarvis in 1907, and signed as a holiday by Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Many countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, a couple in Africa, and Vietnam all celebrate on International Women's Day, many in the Middle East on the Spring Equinox, and others are spread throughout the year. Mongolia celebrates it with Children's Day on the 1st June, while South Korea observes Parent's Day on the 8th of May instead.
