Daylight Saving TimeThe idea of daylight saving time was first mentioned in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin, and likely intended as a joke, but it wasn't until 1907 that a serious proposal for daylight saving time was made in Britain by William Willett. In 1916, a year after Willett’s death, Germany became the first country to adopt daylight saving time, and the UK followed a few weeks later. Currently, about 70 countries worldwide have some form of daylight saving, mainly in Europe and North America. For equatorial countries, daylight hours are roughly the same across the year, so there's no real benefit to daylight saving.

History of ClocksThe clock is one of the oldest human inventions - marking and observing the passage of time over centuries! From natural timekeepers like sundials and hourglasses, the first advances in clocks were the use of water clocks, seen in ancient Greek, Roman, and Chinese societies, and advanced even further in the Islamic world around the 11th century. The first fully mechanical clocks as we know them were developed by European monks in the 14th century, using pulleys and weights to operate. The invention of the spring mechanism in the 15th century, and pendulum clocks in the 17th, propelled clockmaking forward ever more, becoming more accurate, more portable, and more affordable.
